If there’s a problem with your fence, you’ll want to know if your warranty covers the cost of the repair or replacement. Naturally, this will depend on the terms and conditions with your original fencing contractor, as well as any warranty on your fencing materials.

Replacing or repairing your fence is a tough decision, and there are many factors to consider. The issues your fence has will affect whether it’s better to fix it or replace it.

For most fence damage, a good rule of thumb is to evaluate how much of your fence is damaged. If more than ¼ of your fence is affected by rot, weather or other factors, it may be more cost-effective to replace it. Your Jim’s Fencing contractor can let you know what the relative cost of repairing versus replacing your fence would be.

Depending on your fence’s remaining lifespan, it may be better to replace it now instead of patching it up. An aged fence can look untidy and can cause safety issues. Fences that show prominent signs of aging or are more than 20 years old should be considered for replacement.

Termite damage is the exception to many rules, and one of the scariest scenarios you can encounter when building with wood. Thankfully, most fences are treated to keep your fence safe from termites, but in the event you are stuck with them, you will need to have it treated and inspected to make sure the termites are completely gone. This can be an expensive task, and it is often more cost-effective to replace the fence.

A pool safety inspection is a detailed process that evaluates the safety of your backyard pool. A qualified inspector will visit your home and check for a number of criteria, including making sure:

✓ your pool fence is at least 1.2m high in all areas
✓ the gap below your pool fence is no greater than 100mm
✓ your pool gate’s safety latches are correct and compliant
✓ your pool fence has no climbable objects nearby
✓ the pool area has adequate pool safety signage, if applicable in your state

When it comes to gate latches, they must be working, open outwards and be self-closing and self-locking, all in accordance with New Zealand Standards.

If you don’t meet one (or several) of these criteria, you risk failing your pool safety inspection. Don’t stress, though – getting a pool inspection is a great opportunity to talk to an expert and find out exactly what you need to do to meet legal standards for pool fencing.

If you pass the pool safety inspection, then a pool safety certificate will be issued. If not, you’ll have the chance to correct any problems, such as replacing a hazardous pool gate latch with a safe and secure replacement.
